Greetings all, I have become a huge Green Lantern fan after encountering a trailer on YouTube of the Sinestro Corps War. This just instantly made me love the new background of the Green Lantern comics which I had read in the past but not checked in recent years. Since then, I have become a huge fan of the background and have begun collecting the comics from the Sinestro Corps War to Rage of the Red Lanterns and plan to continue until the Blackest Night. The concept, backstory and universe is so interesting and I hope that it continues with much more of the mythology explored.
- Redoing the Guardians of the Universe history section
- Plans to redo the Controllers page
- Fixing up and adding more detail to the Krona article
This is a place for making rewriting articles without intefering with the current one and if good they can replace the actual one. I had written one earlier but an accidental tap of the back button led to me in losing what I had written *sigh*. Anyway, I am working right now on attempting to rewrite the Guardians of the Universe article.

The Guardians of the Universe were one of the first species to evolve in the universe and were humanoids from the planet Maltus. This world's evolution was different from others as many of its native lifeforms gained the benefit of microscopic symbiotes which gave their hosts remarkable abilities. The ancient Maltusians were one of the many races on their world that benefited from this symbiosis but life on their planet was a struggle for survival. In time, they progressed from primitives that fought against reptilian dinosaurs to tribal groups that populated their world. In these ancient times, their race had many beliefs that remained with them for millions of years. One of these included the legends surrounding the creator Daalon and his children the god-like Triarch whose betrayal left their father dead as well as led to the birth of the demonic Predator.
In time, the population began to grow led to an overpopulation of the planet which splintered the great tribes into many groups that fought violent wars against one another. One such group unleashed a deadly virus that targeted the symbiotes within the Maltusians which infected many of their kind around the planet which saw the death of millions as the Maltusians struggled to feed themselves without the symbiotes. A number of tribes survived one of which lived in the polar city of Aps which consisted of an entirely male populace. They began to work with the all female tribe in Zamar to combat the disease which they finally eliminated a thousand years later. After which, Aps and Zamar continued their partnership where they developed their children in the relatively safe conditions of laboraties. In time, Aps began to devote its time to the arts of the sciences whilst the inhabitants of Zamar worked to grow crops as well as care of animals to feed their population. The Maltusians eventually came to the conclusion that a new group was needed to serve as guardians to the next generation and thus they renamed themselves as the Oans.
Rise of The LightEdit
As their race continued to evolve, they began to gain a greater control over their bodies to the point that they eliminated disease and began extending their lifespan for each generation. This remarkable mental ability became known as "Guardpower" and allowed them to perform miracles. However, the children of the Aps lacked the maturity to use their powers which saw the destruction of countless species on their world. This action saw the Maltusians to stop breeding in order to preserve their world as well as to stave off an ecological collapse of their planetary biosphere. In their early history, the Oans discovered the existence of the Emotional Spectrum and charged Krona with the mission of serving as their enforcer in controlling the threats posed by it. This chain of events led to Krona developing the basis of Oan Technology namely Power Rings and the Power Batterys after he constructed the Power Gauntlet. His mission saw him also embark on taming the Emotional Entities that embodied each aspect of the Spectrum.
When the Oans discovered the existence of the fear elemental known as the Parallax Entity, it was Krona who was responsible for trapping the creature within a box that was placed within his laboratory. The Maltusian scientist also became aware of a potent treasure located in the Vega System on the planet Okaara. In time, they would later uncover the existence of the Life Entity on Earth. Seeing its importance, the Oans decided to hide its existence and orchestrating a grand deception where they claimed that they were the first beings to evolve in existence and that Oa was the birth place of all life. This was in an attempt to protect the Entity and prevent it from being harmed in the future. One of the first of the Maltusians who managed to manipulate the power of The Glow was Killala who wielded the power of the Green Flame of Oa. At some point during their existence, the early Oans had created androids known as the Manhunters to serve as their agents though Krona felt that an unfeeling police force would be easily abused which, in time, he would demonstrate by altering their programming to bring about the Massacre of Sector 666.
Over time, the Oan scientst Dawlakispokpok created a law which prevented their race from examining their origins in order to protect themselves from their enemies. However, four billion years ago the scientist Krona defied the edict and witnessed the moment of creation in his experiment where he felt joy in this act. His actions led to to the creation of the Anti-Matter Universe and robbed the universe of a billion years of potential life by introducing entropy to it. For his actions, Krona was punished by the Oan Council who reduced him into an energy form and exiled him into space. For his actions, the Oans decided to adopt the mantle of "Guardians of the Universe" in order to fight as well as combat evil. Should this experiment ever be recreated, the Guardians put into measures that following their demise - there would be a means to combat such a primal evil being unleashed once more and thus created Dyogene. In time, the population problem on Maltus had grown out of hand. One of their last experiments to help combat the coming ecological collapse was genetically uplifting a species of lizards on their world who in time became known as the Psions. Eventually, the Oans decided to abandon their world and settle elsewhere leading to a mass exodus from Maltus and its ruined ecosystem.
Custodians of OrderEdit
Three and half billions years later ago, the Oans settled on a world in the center of the universe which they named Oa where they began to change their physical forms. They also decided to divorce themselves from emotion in order to take their new mantle of combating evil and disorder. By this point, they had created the Book of Oa which separated them from feeling emotions which they believed was a form of protection from its ravaging effects. The last time the race claimed that they felt even the trace of anger was around 1 billion years ago. This act was unpopular amongst their female counterparts who left Oa to settle on their own world where they formed the Zamaron civilization which was dedicated to the ideals of love. Now entirely consisting of the male Oans, the Guardians remained on their world in order to advance their cause. Over the years, the Oans also learnt to manipulate an energy field known as The Glow which manifested as a green flame. This was actually the green light of will from the Emotional Spectrum and was powered by the collective willpower of the inhabitants of the universe. With its energy, they created the Central Power Battery which served as a repository of the green energy and with which the Guardians used as a tool to accomplish their goals.
Around 20,000 years ago, the Guardians learnt of the violent race on the planet Mars known as the Burning Martians. This civilization of ruthless and brutal beings propagated asexually through fire but were constantly advancing technologically. The Oans feared that in time, they would become a threat to the cosmos if they attained the ability to attain space flight which was believed to be a matter of centuries where they would accomplish such a feat. This led to the Guardians waging a war against the planet Mars in order to pacify the threat of the Burning Martians. As they did not consider genocide an option, the Oans decided to tamper with the evolution of the Burning Martians. This was because they saw great potential within the species as being either champions or demons. As such, their genetic manipulation of the race was intended to shift them into a more positive development as well as remove the more destructive traits such as their asexual reproduction by fire. This action saw the race split into two halfs; the Green Martians and the White Martians both of which had a genetic fear of fire in order to prevent the "Burning" from ever re-emerging again though deep down on a genetic level the potential to re-create the Burning Martians existed. The Green Martians over the centuries eventually evolved into a peaceful culture with a highly effective police force which remained on their homeworld of Mars whilst the White Martians became a much more violent race. During the war with the Burning Martians, one member of their kind crashed on the primitive third world in the system called Earth where one of the Guardians was killed in the process with his body frozen in the snow covered surroundings.
Eventually the Guardians decided to begin their first act of creating an interstellar police force that would bring order on a chaotic universe. Looking to the now peaceful Green Martian civilization and their highly effective police force, the Oans patterned robotic android servants on them which led to the creation of the Manhunters over three and a half billion years ago. These Oan appearing machines were given energy pistols and conduits that tied them to the Central Power Battery. Over the millennia, they continued their service to their masters where they brought order and justice to many worlds. One one of their operations included accompanying their creators after a band of thieves stole the box containing Parallax on Maltus. The Guardians followed the criminals to Okaara where they witnessed Larfleeze claim the Orange Light of Avarice which consumed one of the Oans in its release. Realizing the danger involved, the Oans decided to form a pact with the keeper of the orange light. Agent Orange was allowed to keep his prize in exchange for the box containing Parallax and the Guardians word that they and their servants were banned from entering into the Vega system thus allowing Larfleeze to live in peace so long as he remained on Okaara. The truth of the treaty would be a closely guarded secret in order to contain the orange light.
Whilst the Manhunters continued their service to their makers, they began to slowly change which was a fault attributed to their basic intelligence core unit. Whether it was because of living on unknown suns or some other event, they began to plot against their masters. Robotic probes directed at the androids did not reveal anything and the Oans believed that their servants may have been destroyed. However, the Manhunters went rogue which led to the Massacre of Sector 666 which saw the death of millions and left the planet Ryut dead with only five survivors. After which they turned openly against the Guardians with a war that lasted for a thousand years. The conflict would have continued for longer but the Manhunters decided to launch a surprise attack against Oa where they invaded the planet and entered the main chamber of the Central Power Battery. Attempting to claim its power for themselves, a Manhunter attempted to charge its energy pistol but the resultant power feedback destroyed their weaponry. The event was a trap by the Oans as they knew that the power of the Central Power Battery could not be contained by the Manhunters. Defeated, the Guardians decided to exile their creations from known space who were eventually forgotten. The decision to banish the androids created a rift amongst the Oans with a number leaving their world and taking on the name of Controllers who sought to eradicate evil in their own way.
The war had distracted the Elders of Oan long enough for a number of powers to emerge in the cosmos most of which derived their power from magic. Thus, the Guardians embarked on a campaign to rid the starways of magic and fought against such foes as the Sorcerers of Jhes'lesh, the Yattering Tower of Phuul and the Shamans of Ushmiel. The last and most dangerous of these foes were the Empire of Tears; a demonic force that held sway over three galaxies and ruled by the Five Inversions. The conflict between the elders of Oa and the Empire was a brutal one with the demons claiming a number of Oans who were weak of will by torturing them with horrors unimaginable. Only the strongest of Oans survived and managed to defeat the Empire of Tears who were imprisoned on their homeworld of Ysmault. Now a tomb world, the Five Inversions were cruxified but alive in order to remain imprisoned forever. With the great magical powers eliminated, the Oans coalesced as much magic as they could gather into an artifact known as the Starheart.
With the failure of the Manhunters, the Guardians concluded that it was their lack of sentience that was the root of the cause of the problem. Thus, they decided that a living being was needed to direct its power and thus they recruited organic beings to serve this role which became known as the Halla. However, this organization was eventually dissolved the ranks of the Halla's were taken to a successor group that was called the Green Lantern Corps. One of the devices that the Oans used as a precursor as well as a prototype for a weapon used by these Green Lanterns were powerful Eyes though these lacked functionality. Later, Green Lanterns were chosen from worlds from the 3600 sectors of space were given power rings with which to enforce the green light and bring justice to many worlds. To outsiders, the Guardians claimed that the other regions of space were not catalogued due to time constraints and chaotic situations which were to be folded into other protectors sectors until a thorough analysis could be performed which led to the creation of the Unknown Sectors.
Green Lantern CorpsEdit
At its point of creation, the Green Lantern Corps was only a small organization that lacked many numbers. Despite this, they sent their servants to help bring order on many worlds. One of their more famous Green Lanterns was Raker Qarrigat who was dispatched to the black world of Apokolips in order to demand the surrender of its master Darkseid. After arriving, Qarrigat easily dispatched the guards and entered Darkseid's throne room where he demanded the New God to relinquish his control to the Guardians of Oa. However, an amused Darkseid simply listened and later crushed Raker Qarrigat's hand thus destroying his power ring. He then informed the Green Lantern to return to his masters and inform them that Apokolips would forever be under his dominion. Quickly returning to Oa, Qarrigat informed the Guardians of the course of events and urged them to expand the Green Lantern Corps into an army so they could wrest control of Apokolips from Darkseid. The Oans agreed and expanded the organization into 3600 sectors thus giving them thousands of Green Lanterns each of whom patrolled a space sector. Led by Raker Qarrigat, they assault Apokolips where they discovered to their dismay that Darkseid's scientists had analysed Qarrigat's former destroyed ring and learnt of the Yellow Impurity. Thus, the armies of Apokolips were coated in yellow armor and massacred the ranks fo the Green Lanterns. Whilst they fought bravely and adapted their tactics with even Qarrigat engaged in a winning fight against Darkseid, the battle was ended when the Guardians personally arrived on the planet. They decided that Apokolips would be too dangerous without a master and allowed Darkseid to remain in control of his planet so long as he agreed to stem his expansion. The dark New God agreed but on the condition that he keep Raker Qarrigat as a prisoner and spoil of war which was accepted. The peace treaty and pact was formed with Qarrigat abandoned by his masters and the incident forever removed from the Book of Oa and would remain a secret for hundreds of years.
One of the first of the new threats encountered by the Guardians encountered were the Reach Empire. This highly advanced race managed to fight the Oans to a standstill. In order to end the conflict, the Guardians formed a peace treaty with the Reach which prevented them from invading future worlds though their enemies found new ways to subvert the pact. In time, the ancient Maltusian experiment which gave birth to the Psions arrived on Oa in order to meet their makers. However, the Oans wanted nothing to do with the race and sent them to the Vega system in order to live in peace in the hopes that they would achieve their own form of greatness. The Guardians also formed a treaty with the Spider Guild in order to bring a lasting peace. The fact that both these races lived in the worlds of the Vega system was used s a coverup by the Guardians for their true reason for a ban on their activities in those worlds.
Untold millenia ago, a powerful god-like force established itself in Space Sector 3600 that merged itself into an insane deity known as the MadGod Sector 3600. Initially, the Guardians sent the Green Lanterns to deal with the menace but after their failure, the Oans themselves decided to intervene and thirty six of their number were used to seal the entity in an energy matrix whereupon it was imprisoned on Oa. More than 240,000 years ago, a new threat emerged from Space Sector 2813 when a creature known as The Ultimate managed to kill Green Lantern Zharan Pel and claim his power ring. Hundreds of Green Lanterns attempted to stop the creature and were killed as a result whilst thousands more were wounded by it as it headed towards Oa. After landing on a mountain near the Central Power Battery, one of the Guardians confronted the beast and sacrificed himself to destroy it. This act, however, only created a tear in reality where the creature was deposited into another region of space where it continued its campaign of terror.
Millennia ago, the Oans concluded that coexistence with the Gigorr was impossible due to its insatiable appetite for Green Lanterns and thus had the Corps entomb it within an asteroid prison. At some point during ancient times, the Guardians discovered the aggressive expansionist race known as the Tchkk-Tchkk in Space Sector 047. This race of arachnids that conquered their own world and began spreading across the universe which prompted the Guardians in sending their Green Lantern Corps to contain the species as well as seal them on their homeworld. Without any chance to expand, the species consumed themselves but sealed their life essences in a suit of armor which became known as Legion. When the planet Krypton was facing destruction, the Guardians dispatched Green Lantern Tomar-Re was sent to save it but failed in his task. Later, the Oans worked to ensure that the inhabitant of the world was protected in his starship which headed to the planet Earth.
Protectors of the CosmosEdit
The Guardians called a meeting of all 3600 Lanterns to Oa, while several of their number took positions in the universe to try and fill in while the meeting took place. The Guardians had sensed that a great and evil presence was stirring in the universe, and wished the Corps to see it before being sent to confront it. Through a viewing screen, the Guardians and the Corps were rendered speechless as krona and an army of undead in demonic forms tore their way into the living universe. Krona cracked the screen, telling the Oans that he knew they were watching, and that he was coming for them. The Guardians immediately ordered their Lanterns to charge their rings, and set off themselves to confront the problem head on. They found the tear in space, and attempted to seal it, but were stopped by Nekron. The Guardians bravely fought against the Lord of the Unliving, surprised that his powers could actually harm them. One of them flew off to find the rest of the Corps, who were trying to find Krona, but only after being blasted by Nekron's black lightning. As soon as the Guardian found and informed the Corps of the threat, the Guardian began to fade, and died in Hal Jordan's arms.
The Guardians throughout space exerted all of their powers trying to stop the universe from shrinking, as Nekron and Krona planned to revert the universe back to its primal atom, and rebuild it anew. The main body of Guardians remained by the portal to the realm of the unliving, and battled agaisnt Nekron's attempts to break out. Only when Nekron summoned Krona did the Guardians begin to lose, one of them being sapped of his life-force while trying to reason with the mad renegade. The other Guardians attempted to push Krona back, when the entire Green lantern Corps warped to the scene, and battled Nekron's hordes of undead. Following Hal Jordan's distracting Nekron, the Guardians took advantage of the undead Lord's predicament, and herded Krona and the undead army back into the dimensional tear before sealing it.
After rebuilding the battery, the Guardians hold a great event, mourning those who lost their lives, and toasting the remainder of the Corps for their galantry and heroism. They also offerred Hal Jordan the Crimson Mantel, which would have bestowed Corps leadership upon him, though he refused.
Departure and ReturnEdit
With their failure in stopping the Anti-Monitor in the Crisis, the Guardian Herupa Hando Hu believed that they needed to depart the known universe in order to continue their evolution. As the Zamarons were their female kin, Herupa asked them to accompany the Oans on this journey but the leader of the female Maltusians Nadia Safir refused the offer. This led a contest between the two which Nadia lost and she relented; agreeing to join with the Oans. Taken as Herupa's mate, they also uncovered Sinestro masqueraring as Pazu Pinder Pol who was returned to the sciencells. With that last act, they departed the known universe leaving the Green Lantern Corps to govern their own destiny. Despite leaving, the Oans knew that their successors would come from the planet Earth. Thus, they instigated their Millennium Project which saw Herupa and Nadia returning to the known universe in order to select the "Chosen" who would become the New Guardians. They also informed the superheroes of the world as well as their Green Lanterns of the Manhunter threat. Their final act was activating the latent abilities of the Chosen after which Herupa and Nadia grew older whereupon they died.
Whilst they remained in their Retreat, Hal Jordan and Superman journeyed to the extradimensional location after believing that the Highmaster had arrived to kill the Maltusians. However, this proved to be a trap as the Highmaster simply followed the Green Lantern in order to discover the Retreat whereupon it defeated both him and the Kryptonian. Turning its attention to the Guardians, the Oans managed to empower Jordan with their emerald light which he used to defeat the Highmaster thus seemingly ending the threat of the Manhunters. Afters, the silence of the Guardians was disturbed by their trusted servant Hal Jordan. He informed them that they had executed the arch renegade Sinestro after he had destroyed hundreds of worlds with the power of the MadGod Sector 3600. As a result, the ancient programming of the Central Power Battery activated and it began to reclaim its energy from the many power rings. The Oans decided to empower Jordan and gave him the knowledge on how to stop the resultant explosion as the Central Power Battery threatened to become a super blackhole that would destroy the universe. Ultimately, Jordan was successful and prevented the disaster as well as purged the Central Power Battery of the influence of Sinestro.
The Guardians later returned to the known universe when Hal Jordan sent a message to them from the ruined Central Power Battery that Appa Ali Apsa had gone insane with power. Thus, they returned in order to defeat their former comrade and were ultimately forced to kill him. Afterwards, they revealed that they would return and resume their old duty of bringing peace to the cosmos and began recruiting for the reformed Green Lantern Corps. At this point, the planet Oa came under attack from the Qwardian Empire and the Guardians were nearly overwhelmed until Guy Gardner emerged with a Qwardian Power Ring thus defeating the invading forces. Following this time, the Guardians later rallied the Green Lantern Corps when the New Guardians were slain by the cosmic villain known as Entropy who was later revealed to be an empowered Krona. Despite the loss of trust from Jordan and dissension in the ranks, they managed to work together and defeat Entropy as well as bringing about an end to his plans to the cosmos. When their Green Lanterns detected a being that matched the description of the Triarch, the Guardians forbade their servants from intervening as they believed in the ancient Maltusian prophecy regarded those beings that they had considered gods. Likewise, their Controller counterparts and their Darkstars did not also intervene with the Controllers and Oans nearly coming to blows. It was eventually revealed that the Triarch were actually artificial creations of a Controller who modelled them after the Maltusian beings to serve him. After the Controllers defeat, the Guardians engaged in a diplomatic treaty with the Controllers which resulted in the return of the Mosiac Cities.
Death and RebirthEdit
After the death and rebirth of Superman, the Human settlement of Coast City was destroyed at the hands of Hank Henshaw and Mongul I. This act drove Hal Jordan insane as he attempted to gain enough power to bring back the people of his home. This abuse of power immediately brought the disapproval of the Guardians but Jordan turned against them and took on the name of Parallax; a supervillain that fought the Green Lanterns and the Oans in an attempt to gain ultimate power. Killing numerous Green Lanterns and injuring many more, he eventually arrived on Oa where in a last ditch effort to protect themselves; the Oans released Sinestro to confront Hal Jordan. In the resultant fight, Hal Jordan seemingly killed Sinestro and destroyed the Central Power Battery. The act killed all of the Guardians though they managed to shield one of their number; Ganthet who became the last of the Oans. Ganthet later gifted the last of the power rings to a Human known as Kyle Rayner.
During his career as the last of the Green Lanterns, Rayner became a powerful cosmic being as a result of becoming Ion. With his poewr, he reignited the Central Power Battery on Oa and brought about the resurrection of the Guardians who were now born as infants with females amongst their ranks. These children were taken into the care of Ganthet and the Zamarons until they had reached of age. They were instrumental in saving Oa when the Black Circle used The Blind against its star. Eventually, the infant Guardians matured and once again resumed their mantle of protectors of the universe. Soon after, the Guardians of the Universe sent Kyle Rayner on a special mission to retrieve the corpse of Hal Jordan and he developed insight into the true nature of the Parallax entity. Following this, he ceased to operate solely on Earth. He was given his first official Green Lantern Corps assignment from Kilowog, and met with the Guardians, along with Guy Gardner, about his role in the Corps. There, he was given special status amongst the Guardians, who consider him the "Torch-Bearer," the Green Lantern who carried the legacy through the Corps' darkest period. Later, when Rayner was struggling with the great power of being Ion, the Guardians prevented the Green Lanterns from assisting him in order to test his worthiness of his new found role. Whilst Rayner believed he had destroyed entire worlds by accident, it was later revealed to had been the work of his nemesis Alexander Nero who the Oans questioned though they could not find who had placed him on his mission.
Later, the Guardians went about the act of re-esablishing the Green Lantern Corps and they began recruiting many former as well as new Green Lanterns into their ranks. During this time, they began facing numerous threats to their rule once more such as Hank Henshaw who had become the new Grandmaster of the Manhunters. This threat was defeated when Hal Jordan and his fellow Green Lanterns destroyed Biot. The head of the Cyborg Superman, however, survived and was taken by the Guaridnas in order to question him of his knowledge of the 52; the parallel realities beyond the current one. Later, the Guardians servants uncovered a secret plot by the Spider Guild to attack Oa which provoked the arachnid aliens to assault the planet early. At first, it seemed that the Guardians would once again embrace death as their enemies made use of yellow coated vessels but the veteran Green Lanterns managed to rally the Corps and defeat the Spider Guild which seemingly destroyed their Nest World as well as possibly ended the threat they posed. Oa again came under assault by the mad alternate universe Kryptonian known as Superboy-Prime. Despite facing a number of dead Green Lanterns, the Guardians servants managed to defeat him and they imprisoned him in a cell which was encased by a Sun-Eater which generated yellow sunlight that nullified Superboy-Prime's powers. After the string of attacks, the Guardians encased their planet in a gigantic lantern shaped armor to protect it from further attacks by turning it into a virtual fortress.
Sinestro Corps WarEdit
After that chain of events, the Oans continued their plans in enforcing their rule on a chaotic universe and control emotions. However, the hidden fears of the Guardians came to pass when their fallen servant Sinestro had formed an alliance with the reborn Anti-Monitor. These two beings worked in the shadows as they recruited an army that became known as the Sinestro Corps which had harnessed the power of fear that took the color yellow in the Emotional Spectrum. Their first surprise attack involved an assault against Oa itself where they staged a lightning raid that freed Hank Henshaw as well as Superboy Prime from their prisons. Unknown to many, the Sinestro Corpsmen also sabotaged the Green Lantern Central Power Battery and thus also helped free Parallax from his prison. They later began the second phase of their operations which involved the capture of the Torch Bearer Kyle Rayner and take the Ion Entity from his body so he could be claimed by Parallax. With Sinestro, Parallax, Superboy Prime and Hank Henshaw assembled, they became the Heralds of The Anti-Monitor and intended to wage a war against the universe which would become known as the Sinestro Corps War.
The Guardians in the mean time began to see striking similarities between the current events and those detailed within the Blackest Night Prophecy. Though they denied it to come to pass, they decided to partly act when Mogo came under assault by the Sinestro Corps who were bolstered by reinforcements from the Manhunters, Children of the White Lobe and Ranx the Sentient City. At the battle was also a new recruit known as Sodam Yat who was a Daxamite who was hailed in the prophecy as the greatest of the Green Lanterns who would fall in the battle. Believing that the Sinestro Corps would strike against Oa itself, the Guardians of the Universe prepared their forces to counter the enemy movements only to discover that they were wrong as the enemy had instead struck against Earth. With a few Green Lanterns protecting the world as well as the planets superheroes, the Oans decided to make radical steps the first of which was rewriting the Book of Oa to introduce new laws; one of which included the authorization for lethal force to be used.
They later journeyed to Earth and bonded the Ion Entity to Sodam Yat after which the Guardians confronted as well as attacked the Anti-Monitor. When the Anti-Monitor begins absorbing the positive matter of Earth, the Guardians joined the battle and unleashed their combined might on the so-called "Guardian of Fear", partly out of anger for being rendered nonfactors during the First Crisis. Though the Anti-Monitor manages to injure only one female Guardian by grasping at her, he was slowly but surely waning under the combined assault of the Guardians as they labouriously unleash their full might upon him. Fortunately, Green Lanterns John Stewart and Guy Gardner come up with a plan to use Warworld and it's mobile power battery as a weapon against the Anti-Monitor, seriously weakening him by pulling it down upon him and encasing both in a large willpower force bubble as the warworld detonates. Following Superboy-Prime's betrayal of the Anti-Monitor, the Guardians turn their attention to him, and one of the Guardians sacrifices his life to warp Prime out of the New Earth reality by acting as a living bomb. With Hal Jordan's arrest of Sinestro, the re-imprisoning of Parallax, and the supposed deaths of the Anti-Monitor, Hank Henshaw, and Superboy-Prime, the leaderless Sinestro Corps withdraws. During this chain of events, they also banished two members of the Guardians which were Ganthet and Sayd who had been openly showing individuality as well as emotion.
With the war over, the Guardians returned to their homeworld of Oa to try and enforce order on the universe.
War of LightEdit
In the aftermath, the Oans came to realize that extreme as well as drastic measures needed to be taken in order to curtail the threats posed by emotions as well as to stop the Blackest Night from coming to pass. Their first act was the creation of an internal affairs division within the Green Lantern Corps that consisted of members of the Alpha Lantern Corps. Chosen from the ranks of the Green Lanterns, these individuals faced cosmic surgery which transformed them into cybernetic beings that had direct links to the Oan Central Power Battery. It was the hope of the Guardians that the mixture of willpower of a Green Lantern and the logic of a Manhunter would make the Alpha Lanterns superb servants to the cause of order. They also rewrote further sections from the Book of Oa which enhanced the effectiveness of the Green Lanterns by providing them the means to use lethal force against their enemies. This was in light of the fact that whilst the Sinestro Corps had been defeated, they had not been destroyed.
During the DC event known as Final Crisis, the Guardians are alerted by John Stewart of a Code 1011; Deicide, the murder of a God (The New God Orion, being the victim). The Guardians order the Earth Lanterns to seal off the area, and order several Alpha Lanterns to investigate the scene personally. The Guardians are informed byt he Alpha Lantern, Kraken, that Hal Jordan is responsible, and provides false evidence in favour of it. The Guardians, believing the Alphas to be infallible, accept Kraken's story, until John Stewart and Guy Gardner unveil that Kraken is in fact being controlled by the deceased New God, Granny Goodness. Upon being discovered, Kraken/Goodness starts toward the Central Power Battery, as the Guardians leap into action to stop her. While the Guardians initiate the Krona Protocol, Kraken attacks, injuring a distracted male Guardian. Upon Hal Jordan's defeat of Kraken, the other Alphas attempt to wrest him off of her, until the Guardians order them to lower their rings.
Something that was more worrying to the Guardians was the detection of various flashes from the Emotional Spectrum which signalled that various individuals were harnessing the aspects of the light. They eventually concluded that their observation was not an abberation and that their Zamaron cousins had infact claimed the violet light of love which they used to create their Star Sapphires. Thus, the Guardians along with some of their Green Lanterns travelled to Zamaron where they attempted to dissuade the Zamarons from continuing the creation of their Corps. However, they failed as the Zamarons refused to listen to the words of the Oans and concluded with the Guardians returning to Oa where they decided to enact a new law which was no love between members of the Green Lantern Corps. They later sent their Green Lanterns to escort Sinestro to Korugar for a trial on his actions but this escort were ambushed at first by the Sinestro Corps seeking to free their leader but both sides were attacked by the newly created Red Lantern Corps. These actions helped spark a War of Light between the various factions that controlled the different aspects of the Emotional Spectrum.
Later, the Oans decided to review their ban on the Vega System after Larfleeze sent an avatar to Oa where he expressed his outrage over a group of Guardians, who were actually the Controllers, that had violated his sanctuary on Okaara and attempted to claim his Central Power Battery. He made insinuations against the Guardians themselves, before warning that he would make many demands that must be met, or he would unleash his Corps on them. The scarred Guardian destroyed the construct before he could make them however, remarking that the Guardians "don't negotiate with terrorists" and influences her fellow Oans into repealing the ban on Vega leading to the Green Lanterns moving into the system in order to attack Agent Orange's headquarters. As the Guardians approached the planet, they warned their servants to be careful as there was a power there that rivalled that of Parallax. This led to a battle between the Orange Lantern Corps and the Green Lantern Corps; the latter of whom were struggling against the energy constructs that appeared almost invincible. The battle ended only when Hal Jordan made use of the power of a Blue Lantern Power Ring. Despite being subdued, Larfleeze threatened the Oans and claimed that he was much more powerful then them as they had diluted their light by sharing it (though this is likely just a bluff). Seeing as they were unable to end the threat posed by Agent Orange, as he pointed out that the light would merely pass to someone else, the Guardians decided to reform their ancient pact with him that kept him contained in the Vega System. Whilst Larfleeze was willing to agree, he demanded to know where he could find a Blue Lantern Power Ring. Sensing a way through which they could remove both the Orange Lantern Corps and the Blue Lantern Corps from their problems, the Oans decided to secretly inform Agent Orange the coordinates of Odym after which they departed Okaara.
As events spiralled out of control, the Guardians came to the realization that they had failed in their duty and that they could not stop the War of Light. Despite this being the case, the Oans order the Alpha Lanterns to eradicate the presence of Red Lanterns on Ysmault and bring the prison world back under their control. The Alpha Lanterns were successful in capturing the Red Lantern known as Vice who was later locked away in a Sciencell with a muzzle in order to prevent him from using his corrosive blood to escape. Whilst the Guardians were at Vega, the Oan known as Scar released Vice's muzzle which allowed him to burn down his prison cell. The surrounding criminals, including many Sinestros cheer, until Vice begins killing everyone in sight. The situation turns into an outright jailbreak, as Vice wounds the jailer, Vozz.
Upon returning to Oa, the Guardians find the entire planet in uproar, and order the Alpha Lanterns to contain the breach. The Alphas do so, and with the exceptions of Kamjar Ro and Bolphunga the Unrelenting, who helped the Lanterns on Oa to contain the other prisoners, the Guardians order all of the escaped convicts to be executed. Meanwhile below Oa, the Sinestro Corpsmen Lyssa Drak used the cover of the riot to try and find her Book of Parallax, instead she found the Book of The Black. About to take possession of it, she is ambushed by Scar, who seals her within the book. Scar then decides that it's time for the Black to begin, and she uses the Book to crack open Oa's protective shell.
The Guardians, along with Scar, look on the Universe in dismay. The War of Light is raging across the Universe, and they realise they could not have stopped it, and decide instead to prepare for it. No sooner do they decide this, than Ryut, the Black Lantern Homeworld, begins spewing Black Lantern Power Rings from it's Central Power Battery, and spread throughout the Universe. As soon as they reach Oa, Scar reveals her true allegiance, seizing a nearby male Guardian, mercilessly killing him, and then ripping his heart out and eating it. During the rise of the Black Lantern Corps, she has imprisoned her fellow Guardians on Ryut, immobilising them with the black ooze energy. She has implied to them that they are going through some sort of transformation or are being made ready for something more sinister, with the words "Now. You will need your rest for what's to come. Back to sleep -- fellow Guardian" They were later chained to the Black Lantern Central Power Battery and accompanied it when it was transported to Earth during the time when Nekron manifested onto the physical plane to lead his Black Lanterns.
Helpless except for the exiled Oans Ganthet and Sayd, the Guardians were incapable of stopping this dark moment. One of their number was taken by the throat by Nekron who asked them what motivated them as protectors when they did not indulge in emotions. The captive Oan said he did not remember, and when asked if he had any last words, he said, defiantely "Yes. Long live the Corps" after which Nekron gutted him with his scythe. The dying Guardian was given over to Black Hand who helped the immortal Oan to die and later take his energized organs and place them on the ground where they were used to reveal the hiding place of the Life Entity. Despite Nekron's plan to destroy the creature and thus kill all life, he was defeated when its power was first awakened by Sinestro, then Hal Jordan who in turn infused the reborn heroes to create the White Lantern Corps. Their power was used to defeat Nekron and his Black Lanterns thus ending the Blackest Night as well as freed the captive Guardians.
Following the end of the Blackest Night, the six remaining Guardians returned to Oa in order to resume their position as protectors of the universe as well as oversee the reconstruction efforts of their Citadel. They isolated themselves from the Green Lantern Corps and did not attend the burial ceremony held on Mogo of the Fallen Lanterns. Furthermore, they rejected to hold any meeting with their Green Lanterns and instead devoted themselves to other goals. This prompted Kyle Rayner, Arisia, Guy Gardner to bypass Salaak and force a ten minute meeting with the Guardians highlighting the need for change. During this time, Arisia immediately punched a male Guardian in the face over their decision to deny Sodam Yat to make use of the Ion Entity's power. The Guardians explain that they were in the vega system when Yat and Arisia were fighting Mongul, and that Scar was the one who stopped Yat tapping into the Ion power, which Arisia had formerly been assuming the entire Guardian Council had done. Kyle Rayner also makes some pointed remarks on their recent behavior during the Blackest Night, and flat out demands several changes starting with the Third Law in the Book of Oa needing to be rewrriten as it was a danger to the ideals of the Green Lantern Corps. After the ten minutes were up, the Green Lanterns departed and the Guardians begin to order Salaak to make some observations, when he displays an unexpected show of opposition. Upon further consideration, the Guardians agree unanimously to remove the Third Law that forbade romantic relationships between Lanterns, the most controvertial of the new laws passed, which Scar had previously had masterfully installed to weaken the Corps in preparation for the Blackest Night. This rewriting of the Book of Oa was broadcasted to the various Green Lanterns via their Power Rings Even Guy Gardner commenting "Heh, looks like the blue meanies do have a bit of a heart after all".
During this time, the Guardians were also responsible for ensuring their reputation as protectors of the cosmos due to the rise of popularity in Vril Dox's L.E.G.I.O.N. Sometime after this event, the Guardians held a meeting that was called by Ganthet who revealed that he was abandoning his role as a Guardian of any Corps and instead wanted to devote his energy to becoming a Green Lantern as well as directly helping people rather than guiding the lives of billions. Reluctantly, the Oans agreed despite their distaste over emotions and the taking of names. Ultimately, they allowed Ganthet to become the Green Lantern of Space Sector 0000 despite the fact that there were only six Oans alive. In addition, they agreed to Guy Gardner's request in journeying to the Unknown Sectors and bringing the light of the Green Lantern Corps to those largely unexplored regions of space. Following this event, the Guardians summoned John Stewart and partnered him with the Alpha Lantern Boodika in order to investigate the disappearance of Drill Sergeant Stel at the planet Grenda.
The Guardians were confronted by Ganthet, who resigns from his position as a Guardian of the Universe. At first, the Guardians do not understand, pointing out that he was a Blue Lantern Guardian. He clarifies, saying that he will take up a Green Ring and become the Green Lantern of Sector 0. The Guardians are dismayed by this decision, citing their alarmingly depleted number as a reason for him to remain with them. One of them even says, apparently trying to argue him back into the fold, that it has always been an ill omen when a Guardian takes a name, pointing out Appa Ali Apsa, Scar, and even Sayd. Ganthet is not persuaded, and counters that the Guardians have become too detached from those they are protecting, and that he'd rather help those close to him, than preside over billions he would never know or understand. Ganthet apologises if he has confused any of them by his decision, and begs that they do something it is nearly impossible for immortals to do; have faith in him. The Guardians, a little sadly, respect his decision, and wish him well, asking him in return to tell them what he discovers, and that he should not underestimate their ability to understand. A male Guardian remarks that they will need a ring for their newest Lantern, though Ganthet replies that there is no need, and creates one for himself, with a battery, from the Forge. Ganthet would later remark to Guy Gardner about how accepting of Ganthet's decision the Guardians seemed to be.
During Hal Jordan's time on Earth, Salaak noticed that his ring was not transmitting his activities. He relayed this information to the Guardians, who initially wish for the Alpha Lanterns to be sent to investigate. Salaak however, suggests that the Alphas are not yet recovered from their domination by Hank Henshaw, and instead asks that they send someone from Earth, someone outside the Corps, to investigate. Ultimately, they determined that he was in the company of the New Guardians which consisted of enemies of the Green Lanterns. Commenting on the various renegades that sprung amongst their ranks, they commanded Salaak to dispatch a team to apprehend Hal Jordan. Afterwards, their sanctum was invaded by Krona who had the Entities of the Emotional Spectrum at his command. Whilst the Oans were ready to battle the fallen Maltusian, he demonstrated his complete control over the Entities and had six of them take over the remaining Guardians of the Universe thus subverting them. Following that, he had Parallax take residence within the Green Lantern Central Power Battery which reintroduced the Yellow Impurity within it that affected the entirety of the Green Lantern Corps. Now the Corps were controlled by Krona as its members were mind controlled or succumbed to the Parallax Fear Anomaly thus leading to a split within the organization.
War of The Green LanternsEdit
When Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan attempted to purge the Central Power Battery of Parallax, the now corrupted and possessed Oans arrived who battled against the two Lanterns. Gardner and Jordan were easily defeated leading to them being in chains whilst Krona intended to transform them into evolved beings similar to himself by way of Maltusian Evolution Tapestries in order for them to replace the Guardians. However, Krona's plan was disrupted with the sudden death of Mogo with the planet's death causing a psychic blast that left the possessed Oans in agony until they managed to recover. By this time, Gardner had removed Parallax from the Green Lantern Central Power Battery thus freeing the Corps from Krona's mental control. Despite this being the case, the possessed Guardians recovered and were ready to battle the collective Green Lanterns. The Earth Lanterns concluded that they needed to exorcise the Emotional Entities from their hosts by using emotion but concluded that the Oans lack of emotions meant that they needed to instead each the Entities themselves. As the battle continued, Krona battled Ganthet whilst the Corps fought their possessed masters. During this time, Rayner managed to free the New Guardians from their imprisonment within the Book of The Black whilst Jordan managed to tap into his Power Ring into sending a lethal energy bolt into killing the renegade Krona. With the death of Krona, the Guardians were freed from the Entities though they were shocked at the death of their fallen kin. This was because the Power Rings had been programmed to never be able to allow their wearers to bring lethal force against the Oans. Yet, on this occasion, Jordan had discovered a means to override the Power Ring's programming and thus they decided to banish Jordan from the Green Lantern Corps which led to them sending him to Earth without his Power Ring. Stripped from the Corps, they also sent the New Guardians away from Oa as they believed this event was a private affair and that Oa was forbidden from them.
The Oans were also curious as to why Sinestro had been chosen by a Power Ring. Despite the Korugarians past, they did not remove him from the Corps which caused the likes of Kilowog to resign. However, the intervention of Salaak who served as Corps Administrator prevented tensions from rising by stating that everyone was suffering from post-traumatic stress as a result of Krona's forced possession of them. Thus, he urged the Green Lanterns to take time to recover whilst they buried their dead and repaired the planet. The Oans agreed and took Sinestro to their Citadel though forbade Salaak from entering whilst they determined their next course of action. Afterwards, a Green Lantern empath revealed to Soranik Natu that he partially sensed the feelings of the Oans; that they were scared of Jordan after he killed one of their own. In this time, the Guardians also dispatched Emerald Warriors under Guy Gardner to eliminate the threat of the recently released Gigorr that had escaped its prison after a shard of Mogo's corpse impacted its asteroid tomb.
