Hal Jordan is the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814, later promoted to the Green Lantern Honor Guard.

Red Lantern War

Hal was flying an experimental jet for his boss Carol Ferris when an earthquake hits Coast City. The earthquake destroys a bridge nearby, endangering a train, so Hal put the jet on auto-pilot and activated his Green Lantern Ring. Hal created a new bridge and saved the train. Unfortunately, the jet he was flying crashed into a cliffside. Returning to Ferris Aircraft, Hal talked to an angry Carol, saying that the earthquake damaged his flying instruments. Calming her down, Hal invited Carol to dinner, to which she reluctantly accepted. Suddenly, Hal's ring received a transmission from Appa Ali Apsa, saying that Hal must report to Oa.

GLAS - Hal Jordan flying

Hal flies to Oa.

Hal arrived at Oa, meeting up with Kilowog and Salakk, who told Hal the Guardians were expecting him. The three entered the Guardians's chamber, where the Guardians discussed Hal's behavior during a mission in which he physically assaulted an ambassador for his criminal activities. Suddenly, a Green Lantern ring fell from space and landed in the middle of the chamber. Salaak deduced the ring belonged to M'Ten, a Green Lantern from Frontier Space. The Guardians explained that Frontier Space was an on the far edges of inhabited space. Green Lanterns stationed there received limited training from their ring, due to the large distance between Frontier Space and Oa. Also, many more Lanterns in Frontier Space were being killed by an unknown assailant. Hal suggested finding whoever was responsible for the killings and stop them, but Appa Ali Apsa dismissed this course of action, as it would take eighteen months to reach Frontier Space. Ganthet suggested they all take a break so that they can formulate a new plan.

Instead of going to the dining hall, Ganthet took Hal and Kilowog to a hangar containing the Interceptor, a prototype starship. Ganthet told them that it was the fastest starship ever created, it is powered by the green light of willpower, and contains an artificial intelligence. Hal wanted to test it out, but Kilowog stopped him, and Ganthet said that use of the Interceptor could only be authorized by the full approval of the Guardians.

Later, Hal snuck onto the Interceptor, and Kilowog confronted him. Instead of stopping him, Kilowog decided to go with Hal. Entering the Interceptor, Hal and Kilowog met the ship's artificial intelligence, which Hal named Aya. Then, Hal told Aya they were going to play a game called "joyride", giving Aya the coordinates to Frontier Space. The Interceptor then lifted off and left the hangar. Suddenly, the Guardians tried to stop the Interceptor from leaving Oa. Hal told Aya to initiate ultra-warp, but Aya replied that she required to bypass several security protocols. Hal convinced Aya to ignore the protocols, saying that a Green Lantern's life was in danger. Accepting Hal's reasons, Aya initiated ultrawarp, and the Interceptor left Oa. The Interceptor fell through an unstable ultra-warp conduit, but Hal managed to steer the Interceptor safely into Frontier Space. Aya picked up a distress signal from a nearby Power Ring, deducing that the Green Lantern in question was in trouble. Hal piloted the ship towards the distress signal.

GLAS - Hal Jordan vs Razer

Hal vs Razer.

The Interceptor reached a rocky planet, where Green Lantern Shyir Rev was being attacked by Red Lanterns Razer and Zilius Zox. Hal and Kilowog saved Rev, but Hal's ring lost power, forcing Kilowog to defend Rev alone. Hal reached the Interceptor's engine, a giant Green Power Battery, and recharged his ring. Unleashing a massive energy blast by channeling energy straight from the engine core, Hal threw Razer and Zox away from the planet, but the effort caused him to pass out.

After the battle, Hal, Kilowog and Rev contacted the Guardians. Appa Ali Apsa accused Hal of treason, but Hal relayed to the Guardians the threat of the Red Lanterns. Although the Guardians were skeptical, Kilowog confirmed Hal's story. Suddenly, the Interceptor was attacked by a Red Lantern probe, forcing Hal to end the transmission. Hal destroyed the probe, but not before its attack heavily damaged the Interceptor's ultra-warp coil. Aya estimated that reparation of the ultra-warp coil would take at least nine months, so Hal decided that they will remain in Frontier Space to fight the Red Lanterns until repairs were complete. Seeing that Rev was injured, Hal suggested taking him to the nearest inhabitable world, and Rev told him to go to his home colony.

Arriving at the colony, Biara, Rev's wife, tended to his injury. Aya detected a homing beacon on the ship, and Hal smashed it. Then, summoned by the beach, the Red Lantern flagship descended from the sky and dropped a fortress into the ground. The fortress emitted a large hologram of Atrocitus, leader of the Red Lantern Corps. Atrocitus proclaimed that the colony had one solar hour to deliver the Green Lanterns to him, threatening to destroy the planet with a bomb, which the Red Lanterns called a Liberator. Rev suggested they surrender, but Hal and Kilowog refused, saying the Red Lanterns would destroy the planet anyway.

Hal goaded Atrocitus and Zox into attacking him, while Kilowog and Rev infiltrated the fortress. Although Hal took down Zox quickly, Atrocitus defeated him in combat but was forced to retreat when the bomb went off. Hal chased them, but the Red Lanterns escaped in their ship and the planet was destroyed. Scouring the planet's remains for survivors, Hal was attacked by Razer. After a short battle, Hal defeated Razer, but spared his life, and took his ring instead. Kilowog and Aya appeared, having saved the colony's population. The Green Lanterns took the colonists to a new world, which was named after Rev for his heroic sacrifice.[2]

Hal and Kilowog interrogated Razer about the Red Lanterns. When Kilowog began to physically assault Razer, Hal took over the interrogation. Hal told Razer that he should help them stop the Red Lanterns, as they left him to his fate. Razer replied that while he hated the Red Lanterns, he still hated the Green Lanterns, stating he only had even more people to hate now.

After the interrogation ended, Hal and Kilowog contacted the Guardians. Appa was still wary of Hal's recent actions, but Ganthet calmed him down, saying that Hal and Kilowog were the Corps' only line of defense in Frontier Space, and Hal was too far away to be disciplined. Sayd agreed with Ganthet, and the Guardians tasked Hal and Kilowog with gathering intelligence on the Red Lanterns. When reminded of their prisoner, Aya told Hal and Kilowog that there was a nearby facility that could be used to hold Razer. The Interceptor reached the prison complex hidden in an asteroid. There, Hal and Kilowog delivered Razer to Warden Myglom of the Spider Guild. Myglom expressed confidence that their rehabilitation program would work on Razer, but Hal was doubtful.

As the Interceptor left the prison, Hal and Kilowog discovered a mysterious creature clinging to the ship's hull. Capturing the intruder, they placed it in a cell. The creature identified himself as Goggan, an escapee from the Spider Guild's prison. Goggan told them that the prison tortured criminals until they were driven insane. Hal wanted to return to the prison, but Kilowog was against it and Aya unsure of the morality, saying that surely criminals get what they deserve. Hal answered that criminals deserved justice too, even punishment, but never torture.

GLAS - Hal and Kilowog

After discovering the truth behind the Spider Guild's prison, Hal and Kilowog are forced to fight prison guards.

Hal and Kilowog infiltrated the prison and reached one of the cells, confirming Goggan's claims of torture. The Lanterns were caught by guards, but when they tried to fight back their rings would not respond. Hal and Kilowog were placed in cocoons and met by Myglom, who explained that the Spider Guild recently found a Yellow Element that nullified the power of a Green Lantern's Ring. Hal and Kilowog were outfitted with torture collars designed to make them relive their worst moments over and over again. Myglom also said that they will eat them. Aya, projecting her consciousness outside the Interceptor, freed Razer from his cell. Razer retrieved his Red Lantern ring and saved Hal and Kilowog, and the three defeated Myglom and the guards. After the battle, Razer handed his ring over to Hal.

Myglom and the guards were imprisoned in their own cells, and Hal contacted the Guardians about what happened. The Guardians dispatched a new warden who would arrive at the prison in eighteen months. In the meantime, Hal chose Goggan as the temporary warden. Hal returned Razer's power ring as a gesture of trust for saving their lives.[3]

GLAS - Hal Jordan alien egg

Hal discovers alien eggs on Goray's ship.

The group received a distress signal from Captain Goray, whose ship which was slowly being pulled towards a black hole. Goray informed them that he was transporting a small colony of endangered alien insects to a new world. Kilowog tried to keep the ship from falling in while Hal and Razer tried to repair one of the ship's damaged engines. Aya transferred her consciousness to small robots and repaired the engine, allowing them to get the ship to safety. Goray continued his mission, and Aya constructed a robot body so that she could better assist the team.[4]

GLAS - Hal and Iolande

Hal meets Iolande, Queen of Betrassus.

The team traveled to the planet Betrassus, where Hal hoped that he could get help from the planet's Green Lantern. Hal and Kilowog discover that Iolande, Queen of Betrassus, was the prize in a duel between Warlord Kothak and Dulok, Betrassus's Green Lantern. When the time for the duel came, however, Dulok didn't show up, so Hal decided to take his place. It was soon discovered that Dulok was murdered, and his ring gone. The team believed that whoever murdered Dulok wanted his ring to become a Lantern, and in order to draw the murderer out, Kilowog faked his death. Kilowog's ring seemingly chose Prince Ragnar, Iolande's brother, as his successor. In his feelings of triumph, Ragnar let slip that he killed Dulok to gain his ring, and the honor of being a Green Lantern. This was a trick to get the killer to reveal themselves. Instead, Dulok's ring chose Iolande as its new wielder, and she used it to capture her brother. Afterwards, Hal asked Iolande to go with him, but she reluctantly declined, saying that she had responsibilities as both ruler and now protector. Hal accepted and the two parted ways, but not before sharing a kiss.[5]

The team traveled to an uninhabited planet to locate a ring whose owner had been killed. However, an asteroid was about hit the planet. Combining their power, Hal, Kilowog and Aya managed to slightly push the asteroid, giving the team six hours before the asteroid collided. The team found a group of castaways on the planet: General Zartok, Drusa and Grood. Agreeing to search for the new Lantern together, the group separated to scout the area. As they looked for the Lantern, Grood threw Hal off a cliff. Suddenly, rocks began covering Hal, but before they completely engulfed him, the rocks reacted to his ring and released him. Hal discovered Grood had been turned into stone. Looking for the others, Hal found Razer, who had found the new Lantern's ring. As they met up with Kilowog, they discovered that Zartok and Drusa had disabled Aya and hijacked the Interceptor. Suddenly, the landscape prevented the Interceptor from leaving the planet, allowing the team to capture the castaways. Sensing life from the planet, Hal threw the ring to the planet's core. The planet then unleashed a massive blast of green energy that destroyed the incoming asteroid. Revealing itself to be sentient, the planet introduced itself to the team as Mogo, saying that it had held a lot of prisoners captive on its surface to prevent them from causing any more trouble in the universe. Mogo accepted its new place as a Green Lantern, telling Hal to call it whenever he needed.[6]

The Interceptor approached the Red Lantern mothership at a stealthy distance, so that the team could gather intelligence on the Red Lanterns. Razer, deeming that the Green Lanterns should attack the enemy directly rather than sneaking around, exited the Interceptor and triggered a small explosion that turned out to only slightly damage the ship. Hal believed that Razer was trying to infiltrate the motehrship to assassinate Atrocitus. Hal, Kilowog and Aya infiltrated the Red Lantern mothership as well to try and rescue Razer from his apparent suicide mission. Hal disguised himself as a soldier and entered a church, where Cleric Loran explaied to him the origins of the Red Lantern Corps: the Guardians of the Universe came to Ysmault, Atrocitus's homeworld, to establish peace and order, but their enforcers, the Manhunters, slaughtered Ysmault's population. Since then, Atrocitus had been harnessing the red energy of rage to create power rings and give them to worthy people so that he can gain vengeance against the Guardians. Kilowog was arrested by the Red Lantern soldiers, and to keep his cover, Hal knocked him out. Hal brought Kilowog to where Atrocitus and Zillius Zox were about to execute Razer, pretending to be escorting a high-priority prisoner to Atrocitus. Aya hacked through the ship's main computer and gave Hal and the others the opportunity to escape. As they retreated, Kilowog was injured while Aya was captured by Atrocitus. Hal took Kilowog to the Interceptor while Razer saved Aya. Escaping from the Red Lanterns, Aya informed the team that she found an archive that revealed a whole fleet of Red Lantern warships preparing to invade Oa.[7]

Running out of supplies, Hal and Kilowog traveled to a nearby planet, hoping to find food. Hal met a race of jellyfish-like aliens, the Nidara, and befriended one of them, nicknaming it "Norman". Hal discovered they're mining the same yellow crystals the team found on the Spider Guild's prison. After touching a crystal, he became violently paranoid, until Norman took the crystal away. The Nidara revealed that the crystals are their food source, and the Nidara are immune to thier effects. However, a nearby race of humanoids were consuming the crystals, unaware of their properties. This had caused the humanoids to wage war against the Nidara. Hal and the Nidara met up with the aliens, who were being led by Kilowow, who had also consumed the crystals and was leading them to attack the Nidara. Hal managed to restore his teammate to normal, while the Nidara disarmed Kilowog's allies. After Hal explained the true nature of the crystals, the two races declared peace and supplied the team with new supplies.[8]

GLAS - Hal and Carol

Hal and Carol are reunited on Zamaron.

The Interceptor was attacked by an alien creature, the Sebilung. However, two new Lanterns, the Star Sapphire Corps, helped the team subdue it. The Sapphires' Queen, Aga'po, and her niece Ghia'ta, invited the team to their homeworld: Zamaron. Aga'po explains to Hal and Kilowog that the Star Sapphires are Lanterns that harness the violet energy of love. She also explained that the Zamarons and the Guardians of the Universe descended from the same species, until they split up due to their philosophical differences about emotions. Ghia'ta gives Hal a tour of the palace, when suddenly Carol Ferris arrived on Zamaron, having been chosen to become a Star Sapphire. Hal revealed his true identity to her, but their reunion was short-lived, as Carol attacked Ghia'ta, believing that she was seducing Hal. After a short fight, Hal kissed Carol, bringing her back to her senses. Carol willingly rejected the ring, and Hal explained to Carol that he cannot return to Earth until the Red Lantern Corps is defeated. Understanding Hal's duties, Carol returned to Earth alone, but not before giving him a kiss for good luck. Hal received a distress signal from Aya, who tells him that they're under attack by the Star Sapphires. Hal rescued Kilowog, who had been placed inside a crystal, and the two saved Razer and Aya from Aga'po. As they tried to escape, they're re attacked by the Sebilung again. Ghia'ta subdued it long enough for Hal and company to get to the Interceptor and escape from Zamaron.[9]

GLAS - The Crew at Betrassus

The crew of the Interceptor returns to Betrassus, only to find it overrun by Red Lanterns.

Hal contacted the Guardians to discuss the Red Lantern situation. Appa Ali Apsa stated that he had mobilized the Green Lanterns to mount an assault against the Red Lanterns, but Hal advised against it, as they didn't know the full capabilities of the Red Lanterns. However, Hal was interrupted as the Interceptor received a distress signal from Iolande, who said the Red Lanterns had taken over Betrassus. The team returned to Betrasuss, discovered that Ragnar, Iolande's brother, had become a Red Lantern and usurped the throne. As a result, Iolande had been imprisoned. The Red Lanterns attacked and captured the Interceptor. Hal and company met up with the warrior Kothak, who had been leading the resistance against the Red Lanterns. Kothak informed them that the Red Lanterns had placed a Liberator capable of destroying the planet in Betrassus' surface. Hal communicated with Ganthet and Sayd, asking them to make peace with the Red Lanterns, but Ganthet and Sayd revealed that the Manhunters had in fact destroyed Atrocitus's sector as he claimed. The Manhunters were the forerunners of the Green Lantern Corps, a special force that would be unburdened by emotion. However, the Manhunters were unable to understand and interact with emotional beings, leading to them destroying entire sectors in their misguided attempts to eradicate evil. While Hal and the team focused on the Liberator, Ganthet promised to convince the Guardians to reveal the truth about the Manhunters. When their attempt to assault the Liberated failed, Hal called the Guardians for help, but Appa informed him that Ganthet has been exiled from Oa. Ganthet remotely activated a Blue Lantern Battery on the Interceptor, giving the team a power boost that enabled them to defeat the Red Lanterns and launch the Liberator into outer space before it destroyed Betrassus.[10]

GLAS - The Crew at the Prison

The team returns to the Spider Guild's prison, hoping to find a clue to find the Lighthouse.

Hal was informed by the Guardians that the Red Lanterns would try to enter Guardian Space through the Lighthouse, a mysterious superstructure hidden in the Maelstrom, the asteroid belt that separates Guardian Space from the Forgotten Zone. According to Appa, a Green Lantern archaeologist named Taveras was sent to unlock a code that could activate the Lighthouse, but he disappeared. Appa tasked the team with destroying the Lighthouse in case the Red Lanterns arrived first. Aya also tells Hal that while she was connected to the asteroid prison's database, she discovered that a prisoner named Taveras was being held there. Returning to the asteroid prison, Goggan led Hal and Kilowog to Taveras's cell. There, they found Taveras's corpse. Before he died, Taveras left a message engraved in his torture device, saying that whoever wanted the code for the Lighthouse had to free Byth Rok, a Thanagarian prisoner. Hal and Kilowog entered the Thanagarian prison block, which the Thanagarians had converted into a fight club. This Byth Rok who had been taken captive by his fellow Thanagarians, but agreed to tell the Lanterns what they want to know, but only if they defeat Bumpy, the strongest Thanagarian in the cell block. Kilowog was easily defeated, and Hal barely managed to win when Byth Rok told him about his opponent's blind spot. Although Byth Rok regained leadership of the Thanagarians, he reneged on the deal: in exchange for the code, he wanted freedom for himself and his men. Suddenly, a Red Lantern warship arrived at the prison asteroid. Hal used a mind control collar to get Byth Rok to give them the code. Hal negotiated with the Thanagarians to join forces against the Red Lanterns to escape, but instead, Byth Rok told them it was the Green Lanterns' problem and to abandon them to face it. However, Hal predicted the Thanagarians would betray them, and the team waited in the cell block while the Red Lanterns chased after the fleeing Thanagarians. Although the team obtained the code to the Lighthouse, they discovered Byth Rok had stolen Taveras's ring.[11]

Hal and his allies arrived at the Lighthouse, only to find Red Lanterns had gotten there first and used the automated defenses against the Interceptor, forcing the team to fall back. Aya snuck into the Lighthouse and reprogram its defenses, allowing the Interceptor to enter the Lighthouse safely. As the team prepared to destroy the Lighthouse, they were attacked by a Red Lantern ship piloted by Atrocitus and Zillius Zox. Hal ordered Razer to detonate the charges, and the Interceptor barely escaped from the tunnel's collapse back into Guardian Space. However, Atrocitus's ship also made it through, albeit heavily damaged. Hal, Kilowog and Razer infiltrated the ship in an attempt to arrest Atrocitus, but they discovered that Atrocitus set the ship to self-destruct. Razer constructed a force-field to protect them from the blast, but the Red Lanterns had hijacked the Interceptor and reprogrammed Aya to travel to Oa. Atrocitus detonated several Liberators he placed on the asteroid belt, creating an opening large enough for his warships to enter Guardian Space.[12]

GLAS - Hal vs Atrocitus

Hal and Atrocitus fight at the Guardians's Citadel.

Hal comes up with a new plan to get to Oa before Atrocitus. Hal and Razer go to Zamaron, hoping to get to Earth and reach Oa first. However, Kilowog elects to remain behind to stall the Red Lantern fleet. As Hal and Razer get to Zamaron, they ask Queen Aga'po and Ghia'ta, who had become Aga'po's adviser, to teleport him to Earth. Aga'po and Ghia'ta tell Hal that that the journey to Earth could potentially render him unstable, but Hal replies that if Atrocitus exterminates the Guardians, he will destroy everything and everyone in Guardian space. The Zamarons teleport Hal to Earth, but as soon as Hal reaches Earth, he loses his memory of being Green Lantern. Hal stumbles upon Carol, remembering the he invited her for dinner. During their meal, Carol continuously asks Hal about his duties as Green Lantern, but Hal does not answer. Suspecting something is wrong with Hal, Carol takes him to Ferris Aircraft and finds his Power Battery. She convinces Hal to place his ring on the battery, and Hal recovers his memories. Hal departs to Oa and reaches the Guardians's Citadel, just as Atrocitus is about to attack the Guardians. Hal tries to reason with Atrocitus, saying that although what the Manhunters did was wrong, destroying innocent lives will change nothing. Unfortunately, Atrocitus refuses to listen and attacks Hal. After a short fight, Hal defeats Atrocitus, placing him under arrest. He and Appa also promise Zox and the Red Lanterns that the Green Lantern Corps will help restoring the Forgotten Zone. This effectively forms a truce between the Green Lantern Corps and the Red Lantern Corps. With the Red Lantern war over, Hal returns to Earth and reunites with Carol.[13]

Attack of the Manhunters

Unfortunately, things had changed a lot while Hal was absent. Carol had been forced to replace Hal in his test pilot job, while a new Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, had been chosen as the protector of sector 2814. Hal and Guy started on bad terms, their first meeting degenerating into a brawl. Both went to investigate the disappearance of Dr. Nome Chilton in an ancient tomb. As they explore the tomb, Hal and Guy are attacked by three Manhunters, the robot enforcers that incited the Red Lantern rebellion. Working together, Hal and Guy defeat the Manhunters, gaining a mutual respect. After the battle, however, Hal receives a call from Carol, who has decided to break up with him, as she believes his duties as a Green Lantern will not let him have a relationship with her. Hal is then summoned to Oa, where the Guardians relieve him of his position as Green Lantern of Earth. Instead, Hal's courage and abilities are recogized as being of a higher caliber. As such, he is promoted to a member of the Green Lantern Honor Guard, to be sent wherever he is needed.[14]

On his first mission as a member of the Honor Guard, Hal and Tomar-Re investigated a mysterious structure similar to the one he and Guy Gardner destroyed on Earth. After barely making it out of there alive, Hal deduced that there must be an activation signal that is reawakening the Manhunters. While Tomar-Re and the Guardians did not find any proof of the signal, they agreed that this threat must be investigated and allowed Hal to reassemble his team to investigate. First, Hal attempted to recruit Kilowog, who was busy drilling new recruits. While talking to Kilowog, the drillmaster had Ch'p, a small, squirrel-like Green Lantern trainee, spar with Hal Jordan, which the human promptly lost. After getting Kilowog on board, the two went to get the Interceptor and Aya, only to find that Aya had been replaced by a new AI and that she was scheduled to be dissected because of the sentience she'd developed. The two Lanterns attempted to rescue her with Ch'p's help, but Hal found himself having to distract the Green Lantern Chaselon. Ch'p got Aya's AI out of their, but her body was left behind. Tomar-Re then informed Hal that he discovered a low-energy antimatter wave originating on Biot that could be the source of the Manhunters' reactivation.

With his team assembled, Hal, Kilowog, and Tomar-Re boarded the Interceptor and were off to Biot to investigate the antimatter wave without permission from the Guardians. The three Lanterns found another structure, and discovered that they were actually factories producing new Manhunters. After yet again barely making it out of the factory alive, the source of the antimatter wave revealed itself - the Anti-Monitor, a colossal extra-dimensional being who came to this universe to exterminate all life. The behemoth fired a powerful beam at the trio, which Hal blocked with his ring as Kilowog and Tomar-Re escaped on the Interceptor. Hal's ring eventually gave out, and was blasted into another universe.[15]

After being blasted by the Anti-Monitor, Hal Jordan found himself in a steampunk world where he met the Steam Lantern, Gil Broome, who has a suit with a nuclear reactor powered by the aptly named Hardtofindium. Gil designed his suit after Alan Scott's after Alan had saved their world in the past. Hal and Gil fight Duke Nigel, who saved Gil's world from the Anti-Monitor by sending it back into Hal's universe and wanted recognition for his deeds, however he was severely misguided in his actions. Eventually Nigel realized the error of his ways, and Hal and Nigel open a rift between worlds, which Hal used to move Gil's world into Hal's universe, which drained Hal's battery.[16]

Sometime later Hal, Kilowog, and Aya visit the Blue Lantern planet Odym to seek help in their battle against the Manhunters. However, they quickly learn that due to the Manhunters being powered by green energy, the blue energy powers them up just like Aya and the green lanterns, however they gained even more power than the others and overwhelmed them. Razer, who happened to be training to channel hope on Odym devised a plan to have Saint Walker summon a "friend" of his, a giant worm alien to move the main blue power battery, so that the Manhunters could be defeated by normal means. Razer departed with the others and they left Odym.[17]

After leaving Odym Hal received a distress call from the war hero green lantern, Sinestro, who was under orders to forcibly take a prisoner of the Spider Guild to the Oan Sciencecells. The Spider Guild warned Hal to not rescue Sinestro, as the prisoner he had taken from them was very dangerous. Hal ignored the Spider, and did so anyway, the Spider activated his ship's self destruct, but Hal managed to rescue Sinestro and get away. Once on board, the prisoner was put into the Interceptor's sciencecell, however some time later, Sinestro took up a Spider Guild weapon and tried to kill the Interceptor's crew. This was actually the prisoner's doing, it was a brain jumper, and could hijack other people's brains. As Aya's brain was artificial, it could not effect her. Sinestro caught on to this and depressurized the ship, claiming to not have depressurized the cell, in an attempt to exile the brain jumper from whomever he was currently possessing, as it could not use their rings to create a personal shield. Razer nearly choked to death, but it jumped back into its own body, only to find that Sinestro had compromised the cell when he escaped from it after being imprisoned for his attack, and the brain jumper suffocated.[18]

After dropping off Sinestro to Oa and reporting what happened the Interceptor team was ordered to Ysmault, the Red Lantern homeworld, which Shard was once part of, for a peace treaty signing. Once there, The Oan Science Director ordered them to covertly take care of a Manhunter. They defeated it, but Zilius Zox saw them, and they were forced to hold him prisoner on board the Interceptor. Hal and the director managed to convince Zox that the Manhunters are not being controlled by the Guardians, but by the newly-revealed Anti-Monitor.[19]

Pursued by Manhunters robots, the Science Director had Hal escort her outside the ship. There, she used her long-dormant power to render the Manhunters inert. The Anti-Monitor himself then arrived and seemingly destroyed her in a contest of power. The Red Lantern fortress attacked him, but was also no match for the Anti-Monitor's power and destroyed. Aya, deeply conflicted after being rejected Razer, deactivated her emotions, and attacked the Anti-Monitor, taking over his body. The crew tried to convince Aya to return to normal, but she refused to listen and declared herself to be the queen of the Manhunters. Explaining how emotions caused only pain, she blasted the Interceptor.[20]

After being blasted by Aya, the crew was stuck in space and could not fly anywhere with their main battery empty and could not recharge their rings. The Interceptor was pulled by the gravity of a nearby planet, with the atmosphere filled almost of all of methane, and crash landed on it. The crew discovered a dome-sealed citadel and decided to hide over there, however the citizens were hostile against Green Lanterns and attacked them. The rings of Hal and Kilowog eventually ran out, making Razer, the only one with a working ring, a translator for both of them. The crew sneaked into the city, but after Razer's ring went out losing the only translator, they were discovered by the aliens. As the crew tried to escape they were captured by the aliens.

They were taken to a gladiatorial arena where they had to fight against a large creature with a whip. The crew had difficulty fighting it, but Hal noticed on the creature's belt a head of a Manhunter. He tried to make it clear to the others, and eventually his and Kilowog's rings by using the Manhunter's head. They returned to the ship, where the main battery had recharged, and after Hal boasted on his speech at the arena, confusing the other Lanterns as they could not understand him, they departed from the planet with Interceptor.[21]

Trying to get back to Oa in a short time, they had the plan to use the ultrawarp. While they were near Oa, Hal noticed a portal showing up, revealing Carol fighting against Atrocitus. Hal flew through it to come to Carol's rescue, but even with the two of them working together, Atrocitus still had the upper hand. When Atrocitus prepared to finish Hal off, Hal was protected when Ghia'ta jumped in the way and blocked the attack herself. Hal and Carol knocked out Atrocitus, making them the victors of the battle between love and hate.

However Hal was saddened that Ghia'ta had to die during the battle. Despite all that Aya was displeased of the match, seeing as Ghia'ta died because of love. Hal tried to persuade her to come back, but she refused. She prepared to finish Hal and Carol off, but they were saved by Razer and Kilowog. Hal was shocked that Aya declared she will get rid all emotional beings in unison, to replace them with emotionless Manhunters and watched as she departed with her Manhunters. After the ordeal, the crew and Aga'po mourned Ghia'ta's dead. Carol decided to keep her ring and went to return to Earth. She gave Hal a kiss on the cheek and bade him farewell.[22]

Hal was reprimanded by Appa Ali Apsa over Aya's change to evil. Hal admitted that their situation was his fault and tried to suggest talking to Aya before quickly being denied by Appa, whom stated that a new A.I. would be installed and ordered that after its instillation that Hal and the others go to Oa. After Hal asked what action they would take upon his arrival to Oa, Appa stated that the council would decide what to do regarding the universal threat that he had created. Hal stressed to Kilowog that he did not believe that Appa and the other Guardians were making the right decision and that he believed Aya was still inside of herself somewhere, suggesting that the group try to talk to her. Following Kilowog questioning what the group would do if she attacked them while they tried to be nice to her, Hal stated that while they could not overlook that possibility and they would need something to even their odds.

Razer suggested they find the Orange Power Battery, a legendary but lost source of power to use as a secret weapon against the Manhunters. They made their way to Okaara in search of the Orange Lantern but ran into Larfleeze, its owner, who refused to part with it. Though Hal initially stated that he would return the battery after using it to save others, the power of its greed caused Hal to state that the Orange Lantern Power Battery was his and run away with it. Though Larfleeze initially sent several constructs to attack him, Hal managed to subdue each of them before Larfleeze attacked him.

Hal Jordan Orange Lantern

Hal shortly after becoming an Orange Lantern.

After returning to the Interceptor, Hal became obsessive about possessing the Orange Lantern. As Razer and Kilowog tried to help him, Hal accused the two of trying to steal his Orange Battery by double-teaming him before knocking the two out with the battery's power and transforming into an Orange Lantern. Hal retreated to Larfleeze's lair and placed ownerless Orange Lantern rings on his hands. While Razer and Kilowog tried to explain that the Orange Battery was filling him with greed, Hal ignored them until they reminded him of their mission to save Aya. The memory that she was bent on destroying the universe gave him the strength to resist the Orange Lantern's power of greed, and give up such corrupting power. Seeing Larfleeze's obsession toward the battery, Hal realized that it could not help the group as he originally thought. However, the experience convinced Hal that Aya could shake off evil influences, as he just had.[23]
